Well, the point is that any pet in a permanent state of mesmerisation is suggestible ... that is to say, it cedes control of its critical thinking to its owner. This means that the venomous serpent can be invited to impersonate a belly-dancer, eat a raw onion, sing in the style of Leapy Lee, etc. Of course the same invitation may be extended to a cardboard cut-out or plasticine model of said pet; but the outcome will be a good deal less entertaining.

R : Your reasoning seems impeccable, but has a serious flaw. What is the point of having a pet - serpent or otherwise - which is in a permanent state of mesmerisation? One might as well make do with a cardboard cut-out or plasticine model of said pet.

If it is never easy to mesmerise a serpent a second time, why bother snapping it out of its first trance? That state, prolonged indefinitely, spares the proprietor any tiresome shenanigans involving pliers, and saves him or her the expense associated with dual-action antiseptic anaesthetic jelly. In addition, Beelzebub's native testiness will surely be mollified by any course of action that avoids vandalising the dentition of his minions.
