Could this be the finest couplet in rock music?
Well I’ve come back from the foundry and I find you in bed
With Chris and Tim and John and Lindsay, Dagmar and Fred
It’s from the song “Group Sex” on the album The Gab – Gift Or Curse? by The Plain People Of England, an offshoot of the Orchestre Murphy. It is, I suppose, vaguely possible that some readers may not realise just who it is in the bed, so here is some further reading.
I thought it was pretty much the consensus amongst scholars that the greatest song lyric ever written is this, from The B52’s devastating ballad ‘Love Shack’:
Sign says.. Woo… stay away fools,
’cause love rules at the Lo-o-ove Shack!
Well it’s set way back in the middle of a field,
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back
Brit : As far as the B52’s go, I always liked that line “I’ll give you fish!” from “Give Me Back My Man”, surely a response to the demand of the sailor in Jacques Brel’s “Amsterdam” when he cries “Hey! Bring me more fish!”
